There is fresh snow on Mt. Hood for skiing and snowboarding! Winds today will be moderate to gusty, with gusts as high as 52mph at Mt. Hood Meadows. We have a bunch of walk-in ski rentals available today as well as season rentals.
Here’s what Mt. Hood Meadows has to say about the general weather conditions ,” 5:27am: Good morning! It’s Saturday, and we have lots of fresh news, hot off the press for you this morning. The freshest of the fresh is the addition of 11″ of new snow to our base so far in this storm cycle. To be precise: 3″ overnight, 8″ in 24 hours, and 11″ over two days. Latest weather forecast: more snow on the way today. We hope you’ll join us to turn that snow into fresh tracks. If you’re planning to drive 84-35, today, plan to take it easy – there’s snow on the road starting at low elevations. We do expect a busy day. Consider signing up for today’s text messages from us so you don’t miss any updates.
Where did all this snow come from, and what’ll the weather do today? Well, we’re glad you asked! A low pressure system spinning out in the Pacific has been sending waves of moisture our way. Add in 30mph west wind and a big volcano poking way up high. This equation results in something called orographic precipitation (which is more fun to say than “orographic snow”). Essentially, the wind hits the mountain, the air rises, it cools, makes clouds, and drops all the moisture it’s carrying. For us, that means FRESH SNOW! On top of almost a foot in this system so far, we’re expecting several inches of this orographic snowfall today. Bundle up and make it yours.
With 30mph wind accompanying this system, Cascade and Vista are unlikely today. Everything else but Heather (we still need more snow for that one) is scheduled. We’ll be moving you out of the base areas and up into your mountain playground as fast as we possibly can. Please respect any and all rope lines and closures set up by Patrol.
Speaking of rope lines, you may want to visit the rope line maze at the Schuss. Today happens to be National Biscuits and Gravy Day. The writer of this report has a healthy appreciation for the version served at the Schuss. If you haven’t tried them before, take this holiday to heart and give them a shot. Maybe take a few runs first, because you may need a nap after that sort of heavy breakfast. And speaking of naps, did you know we offer daycare? No, not for you – that’s what ski lifts are for. We have a certified daycare facility on site for your kiddos. We’re doing our best to make the slopes more accessible for busy parents.
Finally, if you haven’t heard, night skiing is open for the season. We’re here 9am-9pm today. Along with nights, we have Toyota learn to ski/snowboard lessons. Those start at $39. It’s too late to make reservations for tonight, but you can book a lesson for you or a friend for next week. Know what else night skiing is great for? Missing the hustle and bustle of weekend mornings. Consider coming up later – you’ll still have hours and hours and hours on the slopes. It’s going to be great riding all day and all night. We hope to see you soon! “
